Introduction
During my Zoom meeting with Les for 'Exercise 4.1 Critical Review Proposal', we discussed whether to decide on a documentary style or 'New Topographics' retrospective submission. Agreeing on exercise 4.1, I should complete 'New Topographics' and look at an opportunity to submit a documentary later. Exercise 4.6 gives me that option.
Breakdown
This exercise will take the form of a book-style presentation, with an introductory look at the people of One Arm Point, the historical background and how they live today.
Use Apple Keynote to produce the pages of the book. As this is a proposal, this is only a guide for reference. If I had to create an actual book, I would consider using a bespoke application, for example, Blurb.
Use only images I have produced; stock images or other free resources are not acceptable.
Reference from official material and, if possible, consult local Elders and members of the community.
Research
There is not much source material to refer to; therefore, I suggested to my tutor that I consult the local community for any information they were happy to share.
The local school produced a book called 'Our World.' which is a guide to the school and a brief account of Bardi Jawi's history.
Finally, I would reference any government material about ongoing and future projects planned for the area.
Project Outline
Produce a book commenting on the people of One Arm Point.
Acknowledge the Bardi Jawi people.
Comment on their historical background, e.g. the Sunday Mission.
Show their surroundings visually and aerial imagery of the housing in the community. (I already have an image of the town from the air I took when visiting the Horizontal Falls as we passed over).
Look at their lifestyle today concerning the land and the sea.
Please show examples of the Land and Sea and how they connect to the saltwater people (Bardi Jawi).
Expand on the cultural side of the community, showcasing traditional skills, e.g. spear making, fishing and storytelling.
Compare how the people are culturally today than they were in the past and the newly proposed marine park in 2023.
Finally, reflect on the Bardi Jawi people visually, showing their connection to the land and the people.
Costings
The project's cost will be minimal and created online with a free program. (Apple Keynote).
All photographic will be completed by myself onsite.
As this is an eBook, no additional printing costs will be needed.
I will use all my camera resources for this project; therefore, no supplementary budget.
Timescales
Once completed, consult with my tutor for feedback and amendments if required.
